KGS YOUNG PIANISTS COMPETITION
Area piano instructors and music teachers are invited to enter their piano students in the 21st Annual KGS Young Pianists Competition, sponsored by the Knox-Galesburg Symphony and Carl Sandburg College. The competition begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 and will be held in the Carl Sandburg College F Building.
There is no cost to enter, and the competition is open to pianists whose actual age is 5 through 14 years on 04/05/2014 and who reside in Knox, Henry, or Warren Counties. Participants will compete in categories by age and will perform in order of their age group, youngest to oldest.
This yearís judges are: Dr. Bruce Polay, Artistic Director/Conductor of The Knox-Galesburg Symphony and Professor of Music at Knox College, and Ashlee Mack, Coordinator of Piano Instruction at Knox College.
Works need not be memorized and should follow the contest guidelines according to age group. (please contact James Hutchings, Coordinator of Music, Carl Sandburg College, by email or phone at 309-341-5317 for entry form and complete guidelines) Students should bring a copy of their music for the judges to use.
Prior to the competition, a letter will be sent to the parents at each participantís home address or email address advising them of their childís performance time. If instructors wish to attend, they should contact their studentís parents for their assigned competition time.
Again this year, students will receive written feedback from the judges. We hope this format will foster an atmosphere of learning, growth, and enjoyment for all participants.
On Saturday, April 26, winners will perform on the nine-foot Steinway concert piano, underwritten by Carl Sandburg College, on stage at the Orpheum Theatre. Additionally, the KGS will host a public recital for all winners and honorable mentions to perform on Sunday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m. in Kresge Recital Hall at Knox College.
All participants and their siblings receive a free ticket, and their immediate family members receive a 20% discount on additional tickets to the KGS subscription concert on Saturday, April 26 featuring acclaimed pianist Clipper Erickson.
To enter a pianist, please contact James Hutchings for a copy of the Registration Form and return it to the address below no later than Monday, March 17.
